DJ Coverband

Mathew on Jul 24th 2009 09:37 am

I am going to form a dj cover band called Orbital When They Were Awesome.

Me and my partner are going to mock up racks of gear and wear the little head lamps and play songs from classic orbital live sets. It will be just like as if you were at a mid 90’s rave like Glastonbury listening to Chime for the first time. (Your choice of 1994 or 2004 versions)
The opening act would either be Ardfloor, or Underwhirled. Possibly both.

6 hours of classic techno played exactly like you remember (or want to remember) it.

PROMOTERS!!! Act now and receive a free after hours party with Doc Martini performing such classics as “Unlock the House tape one side b” and “Wicked 09/15/95 last half of side a”

Upcoming Gigs: 10/10/09 Plawtin. 6 hours of classic Windsor Techno playing in Detroit REPLAYED LIVE in Seattle.

Moved, left some things behind.

Mathew on May 31st 2008 02:10 pm

Things get different, don’t they?

There is a long story and a short story to everything. I think today is short story time. The lady and I are no longer, and thus, my tenure at the farm is over. No more coyotes in the back pasture, no more cows eating the apples, no more salmon spawning in the creek, no more Abberdoodle.Deer

I was going to write “No more Aberdoodle killing moles.” or “.. disappearing for 3 hours while hunting whatever” but the fact is this: Very little Poodle in my life. I swung by to get the almost-to-the-last of my stuff and Abby ignored me. I started loading out things and she followed me out, but stayed put until my car door was open and hopped up.

I told her to get down, but she just stared at me, and curled up and laid down, head buried and facing the other way.

Abbers and records

We drove on a flat tire to the gas station, aired up enough to go to the Tire store, and took my dearest to whole foods, where we ate pizza and apples. She loves apples. We then had coffee and sat in the sun where she took to task a chew toy. We drove home and I dropped her off.

Here is what I have been listening to. Underworld’s “Dirty Epic”. Good moody tune to sing along with.  This is about half of the song. Easy to buy if you want the rest.

“Sweet in winter sweet in rain
shake well before use she said,
You never touch me anymore this way”

The best kind of porn.

Mathew on Apr 21st 2008 10:21 pm

Synth porn, like I have never seen it. Beautifully shot, and beautifully played, here is Charles Cohen pwning playing a Buchla Music Easel. Only 14 in existence and I have a feeling that I will never afford one.

Click through for the HD full screen.

CHARLES COHEN AT THE BUCHLA MUSIC EASEL from ALEX on Vimeo

This colorful video features sound artist Charles Cohen improvising on a 1970’s Buchla Music Easel. This extremely rare instrument is one of Don Buchla’s 200 series. Buchla (a pioneer of audio synthesis) only manufactured 14 of these units. The entire film was edited from an hour-long set of free improvisation, with audio was taken directly from Charles’ mixing board.

All of the photography and editing was produced by Alex Tyson, a sound and video artist from Pennsylvania. The film was shot in 16:9 720p High Definition format, using the Letus35 Extreme and a 35mm LensBaby 3GPL

Sometimes I wonder how get get to where we are. I don’t mean me, I mean the House music scene. This is from a thread on a house music bbs, where someone who didn’t get paid and decided that they were tired of getting the run around and called the label out in public.

Here is a response from some guy in quotations, and my take.

I am on his XXXXX Imprint as “XXXXXX” and on XXXXXXX a couple of times as well…I have not been paid from any of those projects and have a remix that i am slated to do for XXX in the near future

This whole “calling out people who are hurting the scene is hurting the scene” attitude is unbelievable.
Can someone who has a backbone please explain this to me?

XXXX doesn’t get paid not only once, not twice, but at least three times and still lines up for a fourth go? You want to do a remix for me?

If you have a problem with getting paid by a label….talk to the label….UGH shouldn’t be used as a last resort to get paid.

If they cannot get the label to talk to them or pay up, how should they go about getting paid? Maybe they should try talking to the label? What about offering to do another release in hopes of getting back in favor?

Is there a limit to releases you should give to a label before you decide that maybe they do not respect you? 5? 3 E.P’s and a remix?

Some of these people have apparently forgot. IT’S JUST HOUSE MUSIC.

For you it is, I am sure. You act like it.

Those who actually take it seriously have another opinion.

I have a plan for tomorrow. (oh noes i has a plan)

Mathew on Mar 19th 2008 11:13 pm

My plan involves the following:

1. Go drown some flies where Bear Creek meets the Sammamish River, also known as the Slough. I plan on catching fish, ffs. I never catch fish and I am getting over that really quick.

2. Clean my car. It is past due and I feel silly to be honest.

3. Get the last W-2 I need so I can file. Don’t give me that look. I was ready to send mine in before I remembered that I also worked there as well. Oh, snap, did I forget that one place too?

4. Post a mix.

5. Nap.

6. Make a certain phone call.

7. Get set up for a mastering session. Oh yes.

These things will be done.

Insult to injury.

Mathew on Jan 13th 2008 01:04 am

I did Vocals on this track a while back, “Original Sinner” with Tom Blacksoul from Croatia, It ended coming out on Deepfunk, Craig Law’s label in Los Angeles. I got paid $100 for the vocal, “more to come off the back-end” and 10 copies to be sent “next week”… “the week” after.. “I swore I sent them”. Whatever. That kind of flakiness is so common it doesn’t even waste space in my head anymore.

By the way, Craig seems to be a nice enough guy, and we all the conversations we have had were nice. I am not knocking him in any way, I am just telling my side of the story as a whole.

I looked for a few copies in shops, but just could not bring myself to actually buy one. Assuming that Deepfunk paid royalties in this case, I would hate to pay taxes on top of the sales tax. Jesus.

Side-thought: Could you imagine the black-hole if I had received an advance large enough to merit a recoup, and my record sold so poorly that every record sold meant less I got, and I got caught shop lifting my own record? Or downloading it? I would be begging people not to buy my record.

Side-Side-thought: I have downloaded my own music using slsk. I didn’t mind it AT ALL.

Anyway, I was trudging the path through hell that is Discogs today, trying to convince some guy that “the proof I have is that I AM THE DAMN ARTIST YOU NERD LIVING IN YOUR MOMS HOUSE” Jesus.

I stumbled across a copy of the record, and you know what? Its being sold from Seattle! However, he wants $14 for the record. It’s not like it’s an import. It’s a shitty little house record from LA that probably didn’t do more that 500 copies. At least I can avoid shipping, right?

You have a copy of “Blacksoul’s” Original Sinner off Deepfunk?

I actually co-wrote and sang on that record, but never received a copy of the record.

Can I take that copy off your hands?

Ahh, I thought you were in seattle. Its bad enough to buy it, but not at an import price, with shipping from seattle.

It’s not like I am trying to get the guy to take the loss and give me the record or anything, but his price is seriously jacked up, and I am really, REALLY annoyed at having to pay over 20 bucks (1/5th of what I was paid ffs) .

Fuck it, I don’t need the record.
