My gf and I spent the day cleaning out the common/laundry/studio area, sweeping up dust, cleaning the tool bench and moving crap and garbage out.

Underneath a bag of nails and crate full of wires/cables I noticed a stack of records. I pulled a couple out and saw a Lionel Ritchie and Pointer Sisters record, and thought I would comeback to it later. Maybe sample or two, Right? We swept up chicken poop, lots of dust, some old rat poop, threw out tons of garbage and hung up some divider curtains. My studio desk setup is less than ideal, but I think it will work. I/not I might need to rewire some electricity to a more acceptable outlet, but that is neither here nor there.

Between moving cans of paint and cardboard that stack of records caught my eye. I grabbed it, started peeling them apart. Wrinkled, water damaged covers.

Donna Summers – I will survive (w/accapella ), meh…

Some CeCe Peniston track with a possible hidden jem in the Steve Silk Hurley Dub… Meh

Some Motiv8 White… Meh.

But wait…. What is this Gem that has caught my attention? Glistening, something drawing me back to the cover. The cover is ripped but I can make out the words “Round Two”.

Round Two – “New Day”
Classic, amazingly sweet and a sad and lonely sound that sticks with you for weeks.

Andy Caine on vocals, and some random dudes on the 909, Jupiter 8 ect.
By random dudes, I of course mean Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald. Who?

You might know them as Rhythm and Sound, Basic Channel, Maurizio etc. The masters of that dubbed out spatial mess of noize and reverb that outlined, wrote, edited, proofread, published and fucking BURNT the book of dubby techno.

Round Two – New Day.

dirty ravers http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/10/25/dirty-ravers/ http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/10/25/dirty-ravers/#comments Sat, 25 Oct 2008 20:29:11 +0000 Mathew http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/?p=49 I stole this tape out of the bedroom of a semi friends sister when I was 16. I am sorry. But you will never get it back. There were two tapes at one point. “Doc Martin, Live at Unlock the House”, 12-9-1995 tape one and tape two. Tape one is gone. Long live tape one. I thought I tracked it down, but it was not the one. I will always remember the Spanish guitar jam that the crowd lost their shit to, because I walked everywhere with it, losing my shit on the bus, on the street going over to Dickey’s house, in my living room with 25 invited friends over at 8am on Sunday morning.

This tape is deep as fuck. Doc at his peak. Heavy. Slamming drums, big vocals and nasty stomach twisting basslines. Snare rolls. Breaks, builds, tension and mother fucking drama in the club.

Extra points if you can tell me what the Energy Flash mix is at 21:00.

40 seconds later he starts teasing the tambourine from Green Velvets “Flash” in and you hear it: “FUCK YEA!”

FUCK YEA!

Rockin’ out on a sunday. http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/05/11/rockin-out-on-a-sunday/ http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/05/11/rockin-out-on-a-sunday/#comments Mon, 12 May 2008 07:36:22 +0000 Mathew http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/?p=35 All you do is pick a hand-full of JAMS, set your levels and go. Some days it is just that easy. Today was that day.

This mix clocks in around 30 minutes. 8 assertive, rockin’ out party tracks. I was thinking about the Flammable show last week, and when putting away my records I grabbed a couple I played and a couple more and jammed out for a bit. Does anybody play this fast either? I never play this fast, but jeesh, It just came out at me.

I played a little dark at rebar, and my feeling was I played a little too dark, but like Brian says “play how your feeling”. The relationship is over, I am trying to sort out a new home, my finances, my music ect. I played how I felt, and this mix continues with that feeling.

I am going to try something new too. Instead of putting out the tracklisting with the podcast, I will wait a week. My pea is thinking that less people listen if they know what to expect. I am guilty of that too. There is also the fact that some people will not listen unless they know what to expect. Guilty x2.

Maybe it all comes out in the wash.
The track listing has arrived.

1. Ian Pooley – Revelations – Definitive
2. Head Nodding Society – Nudge Up – Classic
3. Ooze – Down Up -Work
4. Josh Wink – You are the One – Nervous
5. Ian Pooley – Allnighter – NRK
6. Underground Resistance -HardLife Aaron Carl Remix – UR
7. Steve “Silk” Hurley – The Word is Love – Kelly G Dub – Silktone

Classic joint Sunday. http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/05/03/classic-joint-sunday/ http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/05/03/classic-joint-sunday/#comments Sat, 03 May 2008 22:01:00 +0000 Mathew http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/?p=26 Man, I have been slacking on putting this up for a while. I did this a few months ago for a show on My House -Your House radio

This mix is pretty rowdy. Dropping “Love will make it right” over the “Play that music” is one of those mixes I got attached to right off. I never had the balls to play it live, as it took a fairly quick mix to get out and I was always one of those “hold it till you pee” mixers. It took some control to only put two Ian Pooley mixes in this, I almost had 4 on it, but I narrowed them out. The final track, by Dj Drazil is a Seattle born classic from head to toe. Produced by the Jacob Londons, (You can find their version floating around too if you look) this track came out on the Eat House imprint of Carlos Miguel. I am releasing a few of Drazil’s track soon. He will be the second release on TKFL, and has both a couple classics and some incredible new tracks ready for release.

Enjoy the music

The charitable listing of the music titles:

  1. BlakDoktor – Alacazam – 1998 – Shaboom Records
  2. Anti Trance Terrorists – 1999 – Creative Music (Backed with PJ – Love Will Make It Right… Again -1996 – Stickman
  3. White Label – Feel free to help me out. Possibly Inland Knight, most likely British from 99-01
  4. Johnny Fiasco – Don’t Stop – 2000 – Distant Music
  5. Mike Delgado – Soul Good – 1997? – Henry Street.
  6. Dj Sneak – Throw your Hands – 1996 – Strictly Rhythm
  7. TAKK. This record is somewhere in a crate from a gig. It may be lost forever.
  8. Dave Angel – This is Disco – This might be the Ian Pooley remix -1997 -Island Records.
  9. Daft Punk – Musique – 1996 – Virgin
  10. Hollis P Monroe – I’m Lonely – 1999 – Stickman
  11. Ian Pooley – 1997 – After Midnight Records
  12. Jacob London and DJ Drazil – Hydrogenated Funk – 1998 – Eat House

I don’t mean me, I mean the House music scene. This is from a thread on a house music bbs, where someone who didn’t get paid and decided that they were tired of getting the run around and called the label out in public.

Here is a response from some guy in quotations, and my take.

I am on his XXXXX Imprint as “XXXXXX” and on XXXXXXX a couple of times as well…I have not been paid from any of those projects and have a remix that i am slated to do for XXX in the near future

This whole “calling out people who are hurting the scene is hurting the scene” attitude is unbelievable.
Can someone who has a backbone please explain this to me?

XXXX doesn’t get paid not only once, not twice, but at least three times and still lines up for a fourth go? You want to do a remix for me?

If you have a problem with getting paid by a label….talk to the label….UGH shouldn’t be used as a last resort to get paid.

If they cannot get the label to talk to them or pay up, how should they go about getting paid? Maybe they should try talking to the label? What about offering to do another release in hopes of getting back in favor?

Is there a limit to releases you should give to a label before you decide that maybe they do not respect you? 5? 3 E.P’s and a remix?

Some of these people have apparently forgot. IT’S JUST HOUSE MUSIC.

For you it is, I am sure. You act like it.

Those who actually take it seriously have another opinion.

Insult to injury. http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/01/13/insult-to-injury/ http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/01/13/insult-to-injury/#comments Sun, 13 Jan 2008 07:04:09 +0000 Mathew http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2008/01/13/insult-to-injury/ I did Vocals on this track a while back, “Original Sinner” with Tom Blacksoul from Croatia, It ended coming out on Deepfunk, Craig Law’s label in Los Angeles. I got paid $100 for the vocal, “more to come off the back-end” and 10 copies to be sent “next week”… “the week” after.. “I swore I sent them”. Whatever. That kind of flakiness is so common it doesn’t even waste space in my head anymore.

By the way, Craig seems to be a nice enough guy, and we all the conversations we have had were nice. I am not knocking him in any way, I am just telling my side of the story as a whole.

I looked for a few copies in shops, but just could not bring myself to actually buy one. Assuming that Deepfunk paid royalties in this case, I would hate to pay taxes on top of the sales tax. Jesus.

Side-thought: Could you imagine the black-hole if I had received an advance large enough to merit a recoup, and my record sold so poorly that every record sold meant less I got, and I got caught shop lifting my own record? Or downloading it? I would be begging people not to buy my record.

Side-Side-thought: I have downloaded my own music using slsk. I didn’t mind it AT ALL.

Anyway, I was trudging the path through hell that is Discogs today, trying to convince some guy that “the proof I have is that I AM THE DAMN ARTIST YOU NERD LIVING IN YOUR MOMS HOUSE” Jesus.

I stumbled across a copy of the record, and you know what? Its being sold from Seattle! However, he wants $14 for the record. It’s not like it’s an import. It’s a shitty little house record from LA that probably didn’t do more that 500 copies. At least I can avoid shipping, right?

It’s not like I am trying to get the guy to take the loss and give me the record or anything, but his price is seriously jacked up, and I am really, REALLY annoyed at having to pay over 20 bucks (1/5th of what I was paid ffs) .

Fuck it, I don’t need the record.

tkfl, it’s also a record label. http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2007/10/12/tkfl-its-also-a-record-label/ http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2007/10/12/tkfl-its-also-a-record-label/#comments Fri, 12 Oct 2007 18:06:48 +0000 Mathew http://www.thankyouforlistening.org/2007/10/12/tkfl-its-also-a-record-label/ This week is the announcement of perhaps the coolest thing I have done this fall. The launching of tkfl, the record label. No huge party, no ticker-tape cascading down from the loft above me and certainly no double helping of tofu chocolate mousse after dinner tonight. Why? Because there is work to be done. Nothing more annoying than people trumpeting, laurel-sitting and coattail-riding for things they should be doing already.

Interesting Example. Group of friends dj together for some time, and make music together and also sell/do drugs together. They decide to start a label, sell enough drugs to press the first run and right before they release it, they have a record release party, where they all do loads of drugs and even sell some to the people who show up. Sounds like great fun right? Actually, I am not really opposed to this, as I know that a great many of labels started like this, life lessons, ect. The problem is 4 months later then they are still patting themselves on the back for their achievements and they haven’t actually done anything else.

My point being, is that when you are a butcher, we expect that you regularly cut up some meat. When you are a label, or a writer or painter, We hope that you label, write and paint. I know it feels good celebrate hard word that has led to a nice end, but try not to get caught up in too much back patting.

/soapbox

What can you expect from tkfl as a label? House, techno, downtempo, ambient, soul, hip-hop and the odd waltz throw in to keep you on your toes. It’s all fair game here. I hope that there will be some minimal-dark-disco-jams. The emphasis isn’t on dance floor stormers, though I hope that we have a few. Its more about good solid tunes that you can self-soundtrack with. Medicine. Not everything will be charged for I hope. I will do my best to give out free (and great) music on a regular basis. I will also do my best floss, shave and be cheerful about life too.

There will be plenty of my own music hopefully, as I am on good terms with the A&R guy (as long as he doesn’t catch me sleeping with his dear lady friend), but I have some stuff lined up from some old friends from around the world. The first release will be on November 4th. Generally there will be a new song added each week until the end of the month, when the E.P. is complete, and that is when we move on to the next months E.P.. I will happily accept submissions, but please email me first.

Other than that, I hope to have some interviews, some videos and other content soon.

Enjoy some greenery!

-Mathew
